ZIRCONIUM CROWNS

ZIRCONIUM CROWNS

Zirconium crowns have translucency, giving teeth a natural appearance. In metal-ceramic crowns, light refraction occurs due to the metal in the substructure, and the teeth can have a matte appearance. The translucency of zirconium crowns closely resembles that of natural teeth, thus preventing the teeth from looking artificial.

Metal-supported porcelain crowns can create a dark line around the gums over time. Zirconium crowns, on the other hand, maintain their integrity with the gums for many years, providing a more natural appearance.

In recent years, zirconium crowns have been preferred because they offer both aesthetics and durability. Zirconium crowns have many advantages over metal-ceramic crowns.

ADVANTAGES

  • Especially in front teeth where aesthetics are important, zirconium offers a natural look thanks to its light-transmitting properties. Even with the best craftsmanship, achieving a perfectly aesthetic result with metal-ceramic crowns can be difficult.

  • While mechanical cementation is used for metal-ceramic crowns, dual cements, a combination of mechanical and chemical adhesives, are used for zirconium crowns. This method increases retention and prevents undesirable situations such as tooth fracture or dislodgement.

  • In metal-ceramic porcelain crowns, the nickel used in the substructure can cause allergic reactions in some patients. However, the materials used in zirconium are completely compatible with oral tissues.

  • The dark lines at the tooth-gum border that can be seen in metal-ceramic porcelain crowns are not seen in zirconium crowns.

  • In cases of gum recession, metal-ceramic crowns can create an unsightly appearance, whereas zirconium crowns do not carry this risk.
