ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY
Orthognathic Surgery (Jaw Surgery):
Surgical Solution to Skeletal Discrepancies
Orthognathic surgery (commonly known as jaw surgery) is a treatment that corrects positional discrepancies between the upper and lower jaws through surgical methods, combining orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery. At Prodenta Dental Clinic in Ataşehir, the orthognathic surgery process is planned in a multidisciplinary manner by our experienced orthodontists and the maxillofacial surgeons/plastic surgeons we collaborate with.
In what situations is orthognathic surgery necessary?
Marked misalignment of the anterior and posterior positions of the upper and lower jaws (skeletal Class III, Class II)
Severe dental malocclusions (open bite, deep bite, crossbite)
Asymmetry in the jaws (imbalance of the right and left sides of the face)
Upper airway narrowing associated with a narrow jaw (obstructive sleep apnea)
Advanced gummy smile (showing gums) correction
Significant dissatisfaction with the profile.

Orthognathic Surgery Process
1. Orthodontic Preparation Phase
Before surgery, orthodontic treatment lasting 12-18 months is applied to correctly position the teeth on the jawbone. Surgical planning cannot be completed before this stage is finished.
2. Surgical Planning
Preoperative virtual planning is performed using 3D tomography, digital bite analysis, and surgical simulation software. The orthodontist and surgeon work together to determine the most suitable jaw positions in terms of dental and facial aesthetics, as well as airway management.
3. Surgery
Since all incisions are made inside the mouth, there are no external scars. The lower jaw (BSSO), upper jaw (Le Fort I), or both can be operated on. The surgery takes between 2 and 4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
4. Recovery Period
Patients are discharged after a 1-2 day hospital stay. Rest at home is recommended for the first week; swelling and bruising will largely subside in 2-3 weeks. The jaws are positioned with splints for approximately 2 weeks; during this time, soft and liquid foods are consumed.
5. Orthodontic Final
Orthodontic treatment for minor bite corrections remaining after surgery continues for approximately 6–12 months.
Frequently Asked Questions After Surgery
Will there be any traces?
Since the entire surgery is performed through the mouth, no external scars are left.
Is orthognathic surgery risky?
Like any surgery, it carries risks (infection, bleeding, nerve sensitivity). However, with planning done by experienced teams, the complication rate is quite low. All risks are explained in detail during the examination.
Do all orthodontists prepare for jaw surgery?
Orthognathic preparation is a specialized field requiring additional training and experience. At our clinic, you can manage the process with confidence thanks to our orthodontists who specialize in this area.
Is orthognathic surgery painful?
No pain is felt during the surgery because anesthesia is administered. Any mild pain that may occur after the operation can be controlled with medication prescribed by the doctor.
How long does recovery take after orthognathic surgery?
While the initial recovery period usually lasts 2–3 weeks, full healing and the stabilization of the jaw structure can take several months. This process can vary from patient to patient.
