LINGUAL ORTHODONTICS
Lingual Orthodontics: Completely Invisible Braces
Lingual orthodontics is an orthodontic treatment method where brackets and wires are placed on the back (tongue side) surface of the teeth, making them completely invisible from the outside. At Prodenta Dental Clinic in Ataşehir, we use custom-made lingual systems such as Incognito (3M), Win, and Hidden Wire, applied by our certified orthodontists.
Advantages of Lingual Orthodontics
In classic porcelain crown (full veneer) application, the entire surface of the tooth is prepared. In porcelain veneers, however, only a thin layer of the front surface of the tooth is removed; in some cases, veneers can be applied without any preparation at all. This difference ensures maximum preservation of natural tooth tissue.
How is Lingual Orthodontics Applied?
A 3D model of the teeth is created by taking digital measurements. Computer-aided analysis determines the specific bracket placement for each tooth's surface topography, and custom brackets are produced using a robotic system. The wires are also shaped specifically for each tooth. This system offers significantly higher precision and shorter treatment times compared to standard pre-made bracket systems.

Konuşmada Zorluk Olur mu?
Because lingual braces are placed on the area where the tongue makes contact, there may initially be temporary difficulty pronouncing certain letters, especially 's', 'l', and 'r'. This problem is usually resolved within a week with speech exercises provided by the orthodontist.
Preparation for Jaw Surgery with Lingual Orthodontics
Like clear aligners or classic bracket systems, lingual orthodontics can also be used to prepare for orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery). During surgery, mini screws or buttons attached to the outer surface of the teeth are used to fix the jaws with splints.
The Difference Between Lingual Orthodontics and Clear Aligners
Lingual: Fixed – the patient cannot expel it; it works under all conditions (including sleep).
Transparent tray: Removable – provides comfort while eating and drinking, but discipline is key.
Lingual: Can provide better torsion and rotation control.
Clear aligners: Require less speech adaptation.
Can lingual orthodontics cause sores on the tongue?
In lingual orthodontics, since the brackets are placed on the tongue side, mild irritation and superficial sores may occur due to contact with the tongue, especially in the first few days of treatment. This is completely normal and temporary in most patients.
The tongue may develop sensitivity due to friction as it adapts to the new structure inside the mouth. However, this usually:
It decreases within the first 1-2 weeks.
It disappears completely as the language adaptation process is complete.
