WHAT IS ENDODONTIC TREATMENT (ROOT CANAL TREATMENT)?
Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal Treatment) is the process of removing the vascular nerve bundle (dental pulp) inside the tooth and disinfecting the area, followed by filling the root canal space with special materials.
WHO IS CALLED AN ENDODONTIST?
After graduating from dentistry school, dentists who have completed a 3 or 5 year specialization or doctorate in endodontics are called endodontists. General dentists also perform root canal treatment; however, they can refer more complicated and difficult cases to an endodontist.
IN WHICH CASES IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT APPLIED?
Root canal treatment may be required in cases where tooth decay reaches the pulp, trauma, infection, etc. Your dentist will conduct the necessary clinical and radiographic examination and guide you for the necessary treatment.
IS PAIN FELT DURING ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Before root canal treatment, the tooth and surrounding tissues are numbed with local anesthesia. The patient does not feel pain during treatment. In some cases, the patient may feel a little discomfort. Such situations are easily resolved with auxiliary anesthesia techniques.
HOW LONG DOES ROOT CANAL TREATMENT TAKE TO COMPLETE?
Root canal treatment can take approximately 30 to 90 minutes. This period varies depending on the number of roots in the tooth and the anatomical structure of the tooth. Although single-session treatments are usually performed, in cases such as infection or recurrence of the root canal, treatment may need to be performed in more than one session by placing medication into the tooth.
IS IT NECESSARY TO DO ANY OTHER PROCEDURE ON THE TOOTH AFTER ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
After root canal treatment, the upper restoration of the tooth must be done. Repairing the hard tissue loss in the tooth and restoring the tooth correctly is very important for the success of root canal treatment. While fillings are made in teeth with less material loss after root canal treatment, treatments such as onlays or coatings are used in teeth with more material loss. The restoration phase is very important for the tooth to remain in the mouth for a longer period of time.
CAN INFLAMMATION OCCUR AGAIN IN A TOOTH THAT HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY RECEIVED ROOT CANNER TREATMENT? CAN ROOT CANNER TREATMENT BE REPEATED?
The chance of success is quite high in well-performed root canal treatments. However, in some cases, re-infection can occur. In such cases, treatments such as retreatment or extraction are applied depending on the condition of the tooth. Although repeat root canal treatment is a more difficult and longer treatment than the first root canal treatment, it provides great benefits in terms of keeping the tooth in the mouth in appropriate cases and when applied correctly.
